The 2005 Referee Academy has been cancelled due to several teams withdrawing/not registering with the Cocoa Expo College Showcase Tournament in Florida. The referee assignor was only able to offer our sixteen referees up to two games per day; and only seven of those referees’ were assigned games as a "center referee" throughout the entire week due to the lack of games in the tournament. The $5000 investment was therefore not cost effective nor appropriate for the program's potential return on the investment. The money will be reinvested in our program and will subsidize our four "Grass Roots" academies being held in each of our districts in 2006.
Fortunately, the referee assignor for the tournament accepted our withdrawal and filled the games with local referees and those whom had been turned away. Furthermore, he thanked us for withdrawing in a timely manner and welcomed our participation in the 2006 cup.
The State Referee Committee will be discussing potential alternatives for the 2006 cup at its next meeting. The committee will also decide the four tournaments throughout the state which will host our four intrastate “Grass Roots” academies.
